I KNOW how books, political figures, religious leaders, etc. say this is to be done. I am WELL versed the in the science of attraction and persuasion and influence.

“REGARDING THE DRIVE THING, PEOPLE HAVE ACCUSED ME OF BEING LIKE A MAN.” –Women Who WOW member, Nova Scotia.

This morning, while preparing for a Women Who WOW training on the Anatomy of an Ideal Day, I came across a book I read probably (I’m guessing) 15 years ago. In it, I wrote about my ACHING desire to be around women with “the same drive” as me.

I didn’t even remember writing it, but memories of that ACHE for even just the awareness of women like me came flooding back.

The conversations with other women… about ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY nothing that felt like they were sucking juice from my soul…

Listening as women talked all about their “happening” lives… i.e. what was happening TO them, of course, because what was painfully (for me) lacking were conversations about what WE were MAKING HAPPEN.

Endless discussions about household chores, or diapers or man-bashing.

I VIVIDLY remember feeling almost like I wasn’t even quite in the room… like I was eavesdropping on a conversation happening far from me.

All the while, I’m thinking, THIS IS NO WAY FOR THESE WOMEN TO LIVE. I’d try to insert some of ME in these conversations and I’d be met with (ironically) the same semi-polite stare FROM THEM that I’d had plastered on my face since the beginning of any mundane, time-wasting, soul-robbing conversation.

They didn’t get me.
And I didn’t get them.

And so, VERY early on as a young mother, I (socially) exited stage left. I didn’t know where the women like me were hiding, but I wanted them. I didn’t care to “hang out” so much… but I DID CARE to KNOW THEY EXISTED.

I ACHED and YEARNED to know that there were others like me… unapologetically and passionately creating something they loved… a life, a business, a marriage. I didn’t know where they were, but I figured they had ALSO exited stage left, like me, preferring purposeful solitude to mindless chatter.

This morning, one of our Women Who WOW members from Nova Scotia said, REGARDING THE DRIVE THING, PEOPLE HAVE ACCUSED ME OF BEING LIKE A MAN.”

I very much relate, and my husband — who was BORN to be married to a driven woman — sometimes points it out.

I earn “like a man.”
I have a sex drive “like a man.”
In many ways, I THINK “like a man.”
I do business “like a man.”

Well, like a man…. OR LIKE A SERIOUSLY DRIVEN WOMAN, which is FAR more accurate.

I didn’t even realize that the seeds of Women Who WOW, now an international alliance of seriously driven women entrepreneurs, were planted so many years ago…. in that aching desire to have a camaraderie with women, like me.

So, WHERE WERE THE SERIOUSLY DRIVEN WOMEN LIKE ME HIDING OUT?

Exactly where I was.
In solitude.
Or at events with more men than women.
Or reading books written for men, often ages ago.

We could be seen…. FAR IN FRONT OF OUR PEERS, leading the way, carving our OWN path, as the well-worn paths of others had exactly NO appeal.

Hear me out. Don’t pull me into the entrepreneurial version of “People’s Court” just yet. I have a (very good) point.

In the beginning, I was wholly unimpressed by the whole “mindset/manifestation” movement. No surprise there, for anyone who has been with me for a decade or more. To be totally honest, I ignored the whole “law of attraction” thing…. because I was a mechanics girl. I much preferred — and PREFER TODAY — the law of CREATION. My mantra was — and make no mistake — IS:

It’s WHAT you do that matters.
It’s what YOU do that matters.
It’s what you DO that matters.

This mentality took me far, and so I refuse to fault it. I GUTTED out the first several years of my business, proudly wearing the “early morning” badge and the “hard work” emblem that DID — in fact — create my success.

It wasn’t until years later that I realized I’d made it soooooooo much harder and longer than it needed to be. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I began really paying attention to how my MINDSET was TRULY shaping my reality.

TODAY, my mantra is still “It’s WHAT YOU DO that matters.” Today, I still ascribe to the law of creation, rather than “attraction.”

However, I ALSO KNOW that what we BELIEVE to be true, and what we BELIEVE to be normal and what we BELIEVE to be possible… shapes what we DO. Our mindset WILL guide our mechanics.

And so TODAY, I’m willing to concede that MINDSET is 80% of your success — OR lack of success. And 80% of mine.

I want to offer this as a POSSIBILITY for anyone mentally crafting their response to this post: Just as I OVER-RELIED on mechanics and missed out on ALL of the benefits of mindset and manifestation, it IS possible to OVER-RELY on mindset and miss out on that critical ACTION piece of “mechanics.”

Mindset is 80% of it, but there IS that other 20%. Mindset IS important, but you can’t just Journal yourself a new car or new house. You MUST take action to make it a reality. You MUST DAILY apply mechanics to your business in order for it to “work” and create a profit.

So, yes… my “average” days are amazing. I start every day with coffee I love, my Bible, my favorite journal, birds showing off their singing skills all while sitting on my back deck, which can only be described as glorious. In some ways, I show up every day, being ME — encouraging and empowering and equipping — and I have monetized my voice. This reality was written back in 2002 or so, and — now — has been fully “manifested” in the real world.

Still, even though I DO KNOW the lure of the “easy button” in our culture, and even though I DO KNOW how easy it is to sell “magical” business promises….

I REFUSE TO GO THERE.

While I HAVE “monetized my voice”– and my life in certain aspects — there ARE, ALSO, mechanics involved. 80% mindset, yes… I’ll give you that. BUT, that other 20%? The mechanics? Well, they are a VERY important 20%.

I DO show up even when I don’t feel like it.
I DO do things that — at times — feel very much like work.
I DO push myself, stare down failure, and pull myself up by my bootstraps.
I DO…. do the work.

And I believe — inherently — that work is HONORABLE.

So here’s where I fall on the mindset/mechanics thing:

If you BELIEVE in what you’re selling and if you REALLY BELIEVE in the POTENTIAL of your “dreams,” work will be a privilege, and not a burden to be avoided.

If your mindset is FOCUSED on what you’re creating, you’ll be far MORE burdened by NOT showing up than you are by those moments when you “must” show up when you don’t really feel like it.

So, grow your mind. STRETCH your own pre-conceived (and totally false) limits. REACH for the “unreasonable” levels of success that YOU KNOW — deep inside of you– you were CALLED TO. RE-CALIBRATE new levels of “normal” for yourself. Journal EVERY day. Learn to BET ON YOURSELF.

Do all of this.

But then, get to work. Your MIND WILL create the vision, but your HANDS will bring it to life.

For Father’s Day, I am so excited to share  what a handful of  our Women Who WOW sisters had to say about their own Dads, and the impact they had on their lives and business.  Of course, I’ve written many times about my Dad and his impact on me as a woman, as a person and as a business owner.  I grew up watching him ROCK a side hustle, while holding down a full time job and making time to date my Mom and be a very active father to my brother and I.   My rock solid sense-of- self is due to him (and my Mom, of course!)

My Dad is a very simple man.

And he is —  and always has been–  a very simple business owner.  Back then, he took “side jobs” in construction.  Now, he and my Mom run a multi-million dollar construction company on the OBX.   If I had to nail down the MOST IMPORTANT business lesson I learned from my Dad, it’d be this:

Make it about the money.”

Let me explain.  My Dad was never “confused” about the payment he’d extract from a business transaction.  He did amazing work, and accepted cash as payment.  Easy Peasy.  He didn’t look to his business (or, back then, to his side hustle) for a self-esteem boost.  He didn’t need one.  He didn’t need clients to stroke his ego.  His ego was fine.  He didn’t use business as a social outlet or as a way to look important.  He approached business THE EXACT SAME WAY I DO TODAY… as a value exchange.   Simple. Direct.  Honorable.

For many years, I’ve been all about content marketing… publicly — and without shame — putting on my begging pants (MANY TIMES) begging my clients and members to give me HOT content to keep their businesses hot and growing. So yes… I’m all about the content, and I show up EVERY DAY with a message for my Women Who WOW members AND the “women entrepreneur market” at large…

Of course, I’ve never been about a content calendar or an email schedule. My motto has ALWAYS been “I’ll show up when I have something to say.” And when I don’t have something to say, you can count on me not cluttering up your feed with nonsense.

Bottom-line: If I didn’t have something that will encourage, empower or equip women entrepreneurs to create a business they’re proud of… well, I’d just stay home.

BUT, I don’t stay home.

I’M A CONTENT MACHINE. I WAKE UP AND MESSAGE… STRAIGHT AWAY, FIRST THING. AND THEN, I CREATE ANOTHER MESSAGE FOR ANOTHER MARKET. THEN, I REPEAT. And repeat, and repeat.

I no longer “batch” my content. I just wake up and let it show up…. from my heart. It’s literally served up fresh every single day.

So, HOW DO I CREATE SO FREAKIN” MUCH CONTENT every single day, every single week, every single month????

Well, I don’t burden my content (the message) with anything other than just showing up. I don’t plot and plan my content calendar to support a sales launch. (I tried that and I don’t like feeling held hostage to a pre-determined focus.)

I heard the word “unleash” this week, and it resonated with me. I simply UNLEASH the content and let it do its thing. I DO NOT weigh it down, agonize over my spelling or grammar, re-read, edit, “optimize.” The message IS the message… and it’s this real, raw, FRESH content that is — truly — the lifeblood of my business.

Looking back I realized… it always has been.

Today, I just trust my content so much more than I used to… I just depend on the messaging SO MUCH MORE than I used to. And so, now, my content creation has sort of taken on a life of its own.

I was thinking about all of this… the “strategy” of just showing up and speaking directly, eye-to-eye to your target market… and how HARD people make it.

Seriously…

It’s never been EASIER or MORE CONVENIENT to put your message in front of a market that desperately needs to hear it

Don’t like to write? Live stream.

Don’t like videos? Start a podcast.

Can’t stand your voice? Blog.

Still… even smart and driven business owners.

They think their content needs to be this, that and the other… They think it needs to be epic or optimized for search engines, or “perfect.”

In other words, the people who have a problem producing content (i.e. showing up and talking to their target market) have put content on a pedestal.

And this whole putting something or someone on a pedestal… doesn’t work, friend.

Take sex. Put sex on a pedestal… thinking it will cement a relationship, or fix a relationship, or somehow make you feel better about yourself or your partner or forget your past, or whatever… and even SEX starts to suck.

Let sex be sex, though… just playing and experimenting and enjoying it… and you have no problems. The couples who approach sex almost — dare I say it — recreationally… for FUN. Well, they also have great relationships that go the distance. But first, they had to take the pressure off of sex. They just let the sex be the sex… nothing more. No burdens in the bedroom.

The same goes for content. Don’t put so much burden on it. Just let UNLEASH and serve people. On repeat. Have FUN with it. The more you GIVE AWAY (in terms of content) the more money you make. THIS FACT is as dependable for me as GRAVITY.

I promise to give you exactly what this title promises, but first…

This sort of article, right here, the one I’m writing right now is exactly what I would constantly click on. Each time I’d see something like this, I’d click…

And I’d never think to ask the critical questions… Questions like, “What does this author know about my target market?” OR “How could the exact types of content reach both the cubicle dweller reaching for the next rung on the corporate ladder AND the rebellious, determined, balls-to-the-wall self-bosser?”

Yeah… I never questioned any of that. I’d see a post like this one… or something about the EXACT time and day to post content…. or EXACTLY what to say to increase the number of YES’s I received.

And I’d click… expectant. I’d read and take notes.

And then I’d implement, hopeful.

But then… it wouldn’t work and I’d wonder how everyone on the internet could be so wrong… or maybe it was me… maybe I was “doing it wrong.”

The hard truth is that YOU should know your own market better than anyone else. (Quick 2-question test regarding how well you REALLY know your market) YOU should know them so well that you KNOW what they click on, what lights them up, what ticks them off, etc.

The other hard truth? There are VERY FEW universal laws. ONE, however, is this:

YOU MUST SPEAK DIRECTLY TO YOUR PROSPECT AND YOU MUST NOT — EVER — BORE THEM.

So, if you do not know your market intimately, START THERE because the rest of this post will not help you. If you DO know your market intimately and want some ideas for how to vary your content to attract more of them, here you go:

HOW TO POSTS — These are posts that will generate the highest amount of traffic. HOWEVER, you and I both know that we will often seek out a HOW TO video or how to post, use it for the moment and never remember where it came from. HOW TO POSTS get a lot of traffic, but often result in meaningless “one-night stand” sort of relationships with those visiting our site.

(Fix: Mix in some stories or a REAL TALK message in with your HOW TO post to create a connection with your new visitor.)

REAL TALK POSTS — These are real, raw, vulnerable posts… the ones that truly create a connection with your market. Keep these posts coming, give them a POINT (so it’s not all about you) but share some of yourself… so that YOUR PEOPLE will immediately know that you are one of them.

RAH RAH POSTS — These are feel good posts, stories or quotes of inspiration. They’ll be shared more often, but be careful that you don’t allow the reader/viewer to forget YOUR BUSINESS as a key to that moment of inspiration.

INSPIRATIONAL, HERE’S WHO YOU REALLY ARE POSTS — These call the inner rock stars out of your market. They speak to who your market REALLY IS without their resistance and B.S. and excuses. It calls out who they want to be… and who you ALREADY see them as. These MAGNETIZE your market and get them into ACTION taking mode.

LONG, WALK WITH ME POSTS — Also called “epic” content that will walk your market through a process, a situation, an obstacle. I recommend that you take EVERY HOW TO post, publish it — yes — but then, later, build it out into more of a “journey” post that you walk your market through… it will get great TRAFFIC (like the HOW TO POST) but your BEST prospects will read all of it and also feel more connected as a result.

I am — and have always been — fascinated by the entire concept of feminism. Perhaps it’s because I’ve always felt both…

–“Traditional” AND truly empowered.
— Safe in my Daddy’s arms, but also super confident standing alone.
— So trusting of (strong) men and also (equally) trusting of myself.
— Free to be a sexual woman and also a loving mom.

I never once felt TRAPPED by motherhood or caged by my (very) traditional marriage. I’ve always been FREE to bet on me, free to explore options, free to grow and evolve and serve and be served.

I DO expect men to open doors for me. My Dad drilled this into me as a very young girl. FUN STORY: One guy came to pick me up for a date and hopped right into the driver’s seat, while I stood waiting at the passenger door. He motioned with his hands and mouth, “It’s unlocked.” I said, “I know.” lol…

In my feminist studies class in college, I was surrounded by (strong? feminist?) girls sobbing — literally — over the fact that a man tried to open a door for them… sharing how it made them feel incompetent as if they couldn’t open the door for themselves.

My view was WILDLY different. I expect a man to open a door for me, not because I CANT but because I shouldn’t HAVE to. And as an aside, should a man open or NOT open a door for me… CERTAINLY, has no bearing on how I feel about myself.

In fact, NO MAN (or WOMAN’s) actions or words have ANY bearing on how I feel about myself. Was it Eleanor Roosevelt who said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your permission.”? Isn’t this TRUE empowerment?

And if you’re TRULY empowered… is there ANY room for feeling BAD or somehow UNFAIRLY handicapped or AT A DISADVANTAGE for being a woman?

I don’t know. I was born in 1977.

As I write this, I know that much of my OWN empowerment IS based on the efforts and battles fought before me, by women who DID have to fight for equality and opportunity. I am forever grateful for the world I was born into … based on the efforts of women who WERE NOT chanting popular rhetoric as they fought for the women’s movement. YOUR efforts were AGAINST popular culture, but you did it anyway. Please know that I recognize it, and I do not take it for granted.

I get to love being a woman. We’re able to be soft AND strong. We get to CHOOSE to stay at home or work in an office or create some hybrid option. We get to be sex fiends and our men love us for it… and we also get to bring life into the world, and then nourish it.

But I digress. Here’s my point.

I am seeing a new batch of women entrepreneurs cropping up, who think they MUST have a chip on their shoulder to be taken seriously as a “bad ass business woman.” I watch from the sidelines as they look for confirmation (many times actually ASKING publicly for such confirmation) that it’s okay to be a bitch…. that it’s okay to have an “F off” response to anyone — friend or foe — that challenges them on something… anything.

My take? Sure it’s okay… and sometimes it’s needed. But WHY the whole asking for permission and confirmation thing? Why the whole approach that SCREAMS you’ve got something to prove???? And to WHO?

Inside the walls of Women Who WOW, I see something entirely different… a whole beautiful TRIBE of diverse driven women. Are we WARRIORS when we need to be? You know we are. We’re strong and tough and driven and NOT TO BE MUCKED WITH. And we’re also heart-centered, generous, and loyal. In fact, in the whole group of us, I don’t see ANYONE trying to be something they’re not.

We feel NO NEED to ACT “edgy” or “bitchy” to have an edge. We have an edge because we’re focused and driven and absolutely committed. (And, also… of course, pretty freaking GIFTED.)

So, can we be bitch-y? Yup… but we’re not defined by it, and have no need to be defined AT ALL- actually. And this, I think is TRUE empowerment.

Happy Independence Day! A day to celebrate our country’s independence… and to humbly acknowledge the great sacrifices, commitment, and VISION that allow us to live in — in my opinion — the greatest nation in the world.

I don’t want to take away from the magnitude of what today means to America, but all of the discussion of Independence and Freedom does lead me to thoughts about freedom in business.

I have been struggling lately…. with REGRET.

It’s so funny because I’ve never been a woman with ANY true regrets. Not that I haven’t done plenty that is regret-worthy… lol…. But, regret? Or shame or whatever? It’s just never been part of my reality.

Until now.

So, Women Who WOW has taken on a life of its own lately… building in steam and energy that is hard to deny, difficult to put into words, and it’s getting REALLY FUN. As I keep rising up to meet demand and prepare for growth, though, I’m looking back at my own body of work.

Programs I’ve created.
Books I’ve written.
Events I’ve hosted.

I look back and — don’t get me wrong — I DO see the value in all of it. I saw the value then, and the results that my clients or program participants received was “proof in the pudding.” Businesses changed. Jobs were created. Opportunities were seized. Money was made.

And yet…
And yet….

I left out a lot of stuff. Stuff that came naturally to me, but was difficult to bottle and sell. Stuff like mental toughness and confidence and a rebellious spirit that REFUSES to LOSE. Call me naive, but I thought we were all born with this. Well, I thought all entrepreneurs were born with this.

And I thought that people wouldn’t pay me for it. I mean, they wanted systems and strategies and copy written and sales pages critiqued and pricing strategies, right?

THIS is the stuff that SUCCESS is made of, right???

Today, I still agree with this statement. These TANGIBLES are still what success is MADE OF. BUT, all of the strategies, the blueprints, the systems, the choreography, the PRICING, the sales funnels…. when they work, it IS because they are BUILT on a STRONG CORE.

So as I look back and update some of my programs for my Women Who WOW members, I am adding in quite a bit of this stuff.

But there’s still so much more than needs to be said.

When I look back at the times I broke the rules, it was my own mental toughness, my own stubbornness, my GUT that screamed, “NOT FOR ME.” When I listened and did things my way, I won BIG.

I’ve always written the way I speak, for instance. Never glossing over my southern roots… and using my UBER-SIMPLISTIC analogies to bring things to life.

I KNEW that playing in a local sand box was NEVER going to be for me. In fact, even my “Local” events drew women from 6+ states.

Even before it was popular, I’d share stuff about my life…. becoming transparent before it was cool…. simply because my GUT wouldn’t have it any other way.

Whether stepping up or walking away…. when I listen to my own CORE, to my own GUT, I always won BIG.

So, while I look into my past with a bit of regret… having LEFT A BUNCH OF THIS OUT for so long… I also realize I was training myself — and all of us — on the tangible stuff. And this DOES matter.

What I regret is NOT realizing — and then TEACHING— how you can supercharge your own success…. simply by strengthening YOUR OWN CORE…

By being mentally tough.
Be being Un-fuck-with-able, a word used in one of our meetings.

My hope is that I led some of this by example… that my people could SEE me walk it out, even if I wasn’t putting words to it.

I was disgusted by Kathy Griffin’s horrific ISIS-like display of our President’s head. I never voted for Obama, but I would have felt the same way if she’d done that about him. But I was MORE disgusted by her tearful “he broke me” speech.

He BROKE you?!!

I can do tender, and sensitive. And I am VERY okay being gentle and vulnerable. All of these things are totally part of who I am… but they EXTEND from a strong core that — frankly — can not be “broken.”

Not by a circumstance.
Not by a disagreement.
Not by a business or a career.
And certainly not by another human.

I’m totally okay being tender, but FRAGILE? WEAK? BREAK-ABLE?

Nah…. It’s just not in me.

BUT, PLEASE KNOW I haven’t always been this way. The strength and confidence you see NOW was born from a very dark time in my life. In the DARKEST moments, I looked around and knew that saving ME was up to ME. I girded myself with strength.

Deliberately.
Daily.

And this is the stuff I’ve never really taught.

— HOW to be a quick and confident decision maker.
— How to CREATE mental toughness when you feel WEAK.
— How to build your own confidence day by day.
— How to get to that place where you will ALWAYS bet on yourself, over ANY other possible option.
— How strength and confidence and self-assuredness can be a DEFAULT way of living.
— Identifying the SEED of where ALL of your future confidence will grow from.
— How to build a sense of self and a resiliency that doesn’t wax and wane depending on your circumstances.
— How to be TRUE TO YOU, always… and especially in business.

And so much more.

So, here I sit in my own regret, largely for one of the first times in my life — for not doing this sooner — and something is bubbling. I’m creating something NEW. A 30 Day CORE WORKOUT… for your mind. Actually, a CORE workout for your HEART… your SOUL… for YOU.

So, yesterday was my son’s 15th birthday and we chartered a boat to take he and his friends fishing off-shore. The boys had a great time (which was the point, of course) but the catch was — ahem — lacking. Still, I was fascinated by this little fishing village in the middle of nowhere and the INCREDIBLE income streams running through it.

You Already Know!

This afternoon, CJ will have his last “on the road” lesson before he gets his learner’s permit. In truth, I always have my kids on the road before it’s legal for them to do so.

Why?

Because a CONFIDENT driver is a SAFE driver. I need my kids to TRUST themselves behind the wheel.

In one of CJ’s first driving lessons with me, I took him to a parking lot to practice pulling into a parking space… and he ended up half in / half out / half to the side, and needed to reverse and start again.

He looked at me and said, “What do I do?” I could have told him which way to turn the wheel in order to back out, but I didn’t.

Because a CONFIDENT driver is a SAFE driver.

Instead, I said, “your body knows what to do. What does your body want to do?”

And he just did it….

The same is true for us in business. We DO already know what needs to be done.

We know what to do about pricing. (We may be SCARED to price that high…. but we DO know what to do.)

We KNOW when we need to fire a client.

We know when we need to let go of that employee.

When we listen to our GUT, we just KNOW. Unfortunately, our world is really loud right now. Our diets keep us hopped up on sugar and the news feed keeps us in fear and social media keeps us CONSTANTLY distracted.

It’s NO WONDER so many people go to GOOGLE instead of just a quiet space in order to figure out what to DO.

I learned to REALLY tune into my OWN intuition when I realized that it was God-given. God created even the birds with an inner navigation system… that guides them on when and how to fly south for the winter. I decided to TRUST that I too — being so much more important to my Creator than the birds of the air– had an inner GPS system.

Birds don’t question their inner GPS system. Why? Because there are NO “fly south for the winter” coaches for these birds. There ARE NO books on how to survive the winter months. There’s no google or Wikipedia for them… no “fly by” date… no newscast to watch for weather changes.

There is ONLY gut.

Only intuition.

And, what a GIFT…. The gift of utter simplicity.

This reminds me, of course, of how our great-great-great grandparents did business. No google. No coaches. No chambers of commerce. Just a skill or trade and a willingness to offer it to their neighbors.

Very little NOISE to drown out their inner GPS.

Let me get to the point. Do you need to know what to DO right now? About anything?

Get quiet.
Tune in.
Put a pen in your hand, and ask yourself this question:

If I were FULLY walking out my purpose, what would be the most ALIGNED action I can take right now?

You’re amazing at what you do.
People know about what you do.
They even act interested in what you do.
They slap you on the back and tell you how amazing it is that your business exists.
They may even say things like, “Man, I should hire you for that.”
And you are one SMART COOKIE.

So…….

Why are PROFIT and INCOME still an issue? Why aren’t people buying? Why does profit seem so “slippery” at times? Like you can make money, but not consistently…. Or like your income is somehow “fragile” and “at risk.”

For any newbies in the Women Who WOW world, I have been without money in my business.

Not in the “I can’t fly first class to France” example of being without money… but the OTHER kind of being without money… the REAL kind of “without money.” You know, the “we need saline solution, but that costs $8 and we only have $4 in the bank. I’m sure using tap water won’t hurt.”

THAT kind of without money.

But the WORST part of being without money isn’t having to use tap water for my contacts. (Actually, not so bad…)

The WORST part is that soul-killing feeling that you’ve got to PLEASE this person or THAT person in order to make the money you NEED…. make them LIKE you, bend over backward… YES, I can do that… OF COURSE, I’ll throw that in for free… DEFINITELY, I’ll take payments, or wait on your check, or twist myself into a human pretzel…. ANYTHING to get the money I “need.”

THAT was the worst part.

Fortunately, two things broke me out of this heartbreaking “NEEDINESS” in business.

FIRST, I realized the truth: I never NEEDED any client to give me money. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a realist. We all NEED money. But, the shift for me came when I realized I didn’t need THEIR money…. when I realized that there were SO MANY WAYS I could create money.

I’d literally make a list.

I knew I could get money from waiting tables. (I came close to this reality…. and even applied and interviewed for the job.)
I knew I could get money from little quirky ideas I had…. “promotion commotion” or “welcome wagon,” or at home secretarial services, or selling something I owned but no longer used, or babysitting.

I did all of those things and more, EXCEPT babysitting.

So, that was first. I had to BOOST my money confidence by reminding myself that there were INFINITE ways to create the money I needed.

This eliminated my neediness in sales conversations. It allowed me to restore the necessary “balance of power” between client and service provider. It allowed me to “stick to my guns” and state my own terms. It allowed me to SERVE from a position of strength and not from a posture of neediness.

That was step one.

The second thing that helped was CREATING A PREDICTABLE PROFIT ENGINE in my business…. A way to generate leads, nurture them, sell to them, serve them… on repeat.

I bought as many courses, books, etc. as I could afford to help me make sense of this whole “profit problem” and I found them lacking.

Unnecessarily complex.
Complicated.
Weird.
Salesy.
Contrived.

Yuck. None of that would work for me.

Here’s what I discovered: There are THREE TOOLS that are critical to ANY Profit plan that allows you to increase your income, AT WILL, anytime you’d like:

CLARITY. You must be crystal clear on what you’re selling and who you’re selling to, of course. BUT, you must also be crystal clear on why they should buy from you over ANY and ALL Other options available to them and why they should buy NOW.

Without this clarity, you will forever be clawing your way out of profit gaps in your business…. 3 steps forward, 63 back.

POSITIONING. Who are YOU to your market? If you are “just another option,” you’ll struggle to bring in consistent or impressive income. Being “just another option” sends the message that your market can get WHAT YOU OFFER any myriad of other places. It invites price comparisons and allows your market to delay buying. You MUST position yourself DELIBERATELY within your market. I think this is where I excel with my clients…. identifying what makes them SUPERIOR.

PRESCRIPTION. Your market, your prospects are like you. They have a LOT going on and APPRECIATE you prescribing an ideal course of action for them. Why? Because otherwise, you give them MORE options to consider and make them WORK HARD to decide what’s right for them. Instead, listen…. ask questions…. and then PRESCRIBE a course of action that will help them do whatever you help them do. Don’t make them work to figure out what’s next. PRESCRIBE next steps. “Based on what you’ve shared with me, I’ll give you a couple of options, and tell you which I think would be best. Then you choose what works best for you based on budget and sense of urgency.”

I’ll never forget reading a CosmoGirl headline when my girls were elementary age. It said, “Want to make your first million, live in a mansion, come home to a foxy husband and adoring kids — all by the time you’re 25? Why not? This is your new reality!”

I remember thinking, “God help us if this is what young girls grow up expecting… all of this, about 3 years out of college?”

Today I think…. maybe I was wrong.

When I had this gut reaction to the CosmoGirl headline, I was a very young mother, with one (or two?) kids still nursing, up to my elbows in spit up, poop, or worse. I had to produce a full-time income while working around 3 kid’s nap schedules and eating schedules and — of course — my heart’s desire to enjoy EVERY MOMENT with them. (i.e. No nanny or sitters here.)

Today, I woke up thinking about this article and the question, “Can women REALLY have it all?” and I my KNEE-JERK response was, “YES OF COURSE…. AND THEY SHOULD”

The money.
The body.
The marriage.
The home.
The family.
The fame.

Today, I live exactly how I want to live… exactly where, exactly how. (I’m working daily on the whole body thing, which — of course — could have been SMOKING HOT all along… but I didn’t see the possibilities.)

Today, I see what’s been possible all along… and I look back to the times in my life when I thought that “it wasn’t my season to go big… let the kids get a little older first, etc.”

TODAY, I look back and think I was just making excuses… that I could have/should have done it… that I could have built an amazing brand or business in the same amount of time that I was building one that was “mediocre.” Succeeding, yes. Paying our bills, yes. Even breaking six figures for the first time… BUT falling WAY short of what I knew I was going after.

Of course, let’s face facts… TODAY, I’m no longer in that season. My kids, all teenagers, are very self-reliant. Two are driving, in charge of their own schedules, etc. So, I waffle a bit…. maybe I WAS right about that “young kid” season… and my lack of time, and how it would make “GOING BIG” so “impossible.”

BUT TIME IS SO RELATIVE ISN’T IT?

I’m always shocked at how nearly EVERYONE feels they have no time.

The stay at home mom with one kid OR The entrepreneur with no kids will QUICKLY (and WITHOUT APOLOGY) bemoan the same “lack of time” as the Single mom-of-three with no child support coming in, no backup plan, working a full-time job and building her side hustle at night.

I’m not immune.

My own mentor recently busted my chops, “I’m not sure what you’re DOING all day, but…” OUCH. Here I was feeling ultra productive, until THAT little conversation which exposed a whole new level of production that was possible for me.

A couple of my kids’ friends have stay-at-home moms. These women are home alone for 8 hours every single day and complain vehemently (out loud) about no time, no time, no time. My kids literally come home in disbelief. Gobstopped.

But, time is relative, for all of us.

So, let’s get back to it. Can women entrepreneurs REALLY have it ALL? Whenever they decide to have it all?

I’ve got to go with YES.

As I sit here typing passionately on my luxurious deck overlooking 150 acres of farm land with my dog snoozing next to me and an amazing day and night planned… I’ve got to say YES.

WHY DIDN’T I CREATE THIS LIFE, THIS BUSINESS, THIS SUCCESS ‘BACK THEN’?

I — frankly — didn’t know I could.

I saw all of life as a trade off. Not in a bad way, but in an “I’m an adult and this is the way it is” way.

I thought more money meant less time with my family.
I thought success meant BUSY.
I thought working on my business meant giving up the time to work on my body.
I thought I was being realistic… mature… WISE even.

I never stopped to CHALLENGE my own thinking. I looked at how OTHERS created success and I thought that was the only way. And I didn’t WANT success that way. I wasn’t willing… and so I held off. It wasn’t until later that I started diving deep and determining to create success MY way.

At first, I just tested “reality.” I pushed the envelope of my expectations. Then a little further. I started becoming a bit “unreasonable,” more “outside the norm” of what I thought was possible… for me…. right now. GRADUALLY, I challenged my own limited thinking (what I called “reality.”) And for a long time, I was surprised every time to realize I just get to WRITE my own reality. I get to wake up and CREATE it… to a very large degree.

I was accused of it recently… from someone who wanted to challenge how my “disdain” for rules fit into my Christian worldview. This person either didn’t know or conveniently forgot how REVOLUTIONARY Jesus was in His day. But I’m not here to debate religion with you.

I want to challenge assumptions and continue to simplify FINANCIAL SUCCESS for women entrepreneurs.

Am I an anarchist?

No.
Am I suspicious of (and sometimes resentful of and even DEFIANT of) RULES?
I am. I question, often out loud:

Who SAYS that’s a rule?
Who MADE that a rule?
And — WHY?
WHY do “they” want us to follow their system?
Who are “they” to begin with?
Who deemed THEM in charge? Who made THEM the rule makers?

More importantly, given ALL the rules so confidently written and spoken to entrepreneurs about creating success…. WITH AN 80% FAILURE RATE, WHY DO SO FEW QUESTION THIER EFFECTIVENESS? Why do so many follow BLINDLY?

So, yeah… I have my suspicions and am somewhat defiant.

Am I an anarchist?
I’ve never considered the question…. but do I FULLY INTEND to be self-governed? And resent attempts at BEING governed?

The completely honest answer is yes.

I do BRISTLE when I hear people tell me what I MUST do in order to succeed. OFTEN, I hear these rules that I completely ignored, succeeded anyway, and think,

“Things that make you go hmmm…. ”

I DO get frustrated when our Women Who WOW members come to me with what THEY have been told by a mentor. “They said that I HAVE to do ______________, but I’m not really comfortable with it.”

My response is measured.
I don’t want to dishonor another mentor.

I usually say something like, “That’s one way to go. What are some other options you’ve considered?” OR, my best southern “hmmmm.” OR “Okay. What do YOU think?”

Has this defiance, this suspicion, this resentment of RULES… this DETERMINATION to be SELF-GOVERNED been responsible for some of my business success?

OH, YOU BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR IT HAS.

Do I think it’s HEALTHY — and even COMMON-SENSICAL– to challenge rules that lead to a — across the board — 80% failure rate?

I do. In that spirit, here’s a woefully incomplete list of business rules that YOU may consider giving the “middle finger salute:”

• You have to WAIT to succeed or be in business for ______ years or months before you can expect success.
• You MUST do _________. (insert some specific strategy: video, blog, network, give away your stuff, start local, etc.)
• You MUST do it THIS WAY.
• It takes money to make money.

All hogwash. There are SO many routes to wild success, so when you hear ONE way, or ONE MUST… ignore it. Please.

I don’t like RULES, but I LOVE principles. Here are a few PRINCIPLES you may consider embracing:

— DAILYNESS. (Success IS a marathon, not a sprint.)
— Authenticity.
— Ethics. (Do RIGHT by people.)
— OVER -deliver.
— Solve a specific problem.
— HUSTLE.

What do top earning women in business have in common with each other that the vast majority of entrepreneurs (with mediocre incomes) simply feel is “too much?”

We show up DAILY.

Not weekly, or 3x weekly, or ALMOST daily.
But DAILY.

And we don’t just show up.
We show up with something to say.
A message to share.
A cause to promote.
A call to arms for our market.
A lesson or story or perspective shift to share.

But it wasn’t “easy.” We — too — thought once that daily was too much, too often. We– too — thought we’d never be able to keep up, or that maybe we’d run out of things to say. We — too — worried that nobody would be listening and that our best efforts would be ignored or dismissed.

“I want to shout out to everyone who has ever heard Michelle say “message daily”. I too thought it was a lot but since the Dallas conference (I committed there message daily) I have messaged daily. It helps me with clarity as well as showing up as the expert, I know am, to those watching and now those newly watching. I can not stress enough to the nay sayers that daily is too much. It must be daily.”

Let me say it again… if you are truly aiming for the extraordinary, if you are truly building something of significance, if you are SERIOUS about earning an impressive income, expanding your impact and influence….

It MUST be daily.

Showing up daily GETS noticed.
Showing up daily creates your BEST content… because it’s created “hot and fresh” every morning.
Showing up daily changes things.
Showing up daily creates momentum that cannot and WILL NOT be ignored.
Showing up daily builds a relationship with your market. They will begin to feel like they KNOW you… and, indeed, they do.
Showing up daily SHIFTS things in your favor.

So, first… these top earning women show up daily. BUT, that’s not ALL we have in common. HOW we show up also matters.

There are some principles that make DAILY work… work.

We show up AUTHENTICALLY. We leave the masks at home.
We show up READY TO SERVE. We want our free content to make a difference.
We show up BOLD. We say what NEEDS to be said, even when (especially when) it’s unpopular.

First of all, I have been there, and I may be there again. The good news is that I know how to break THROUGH those secret, invisible barriers now… and so while I may ENCOUNTER it again, I will never stay there again.

Forgive me for what I am about to say. It will expose my small town “charm” as small town “crazy,” and maybe just expose a PART of me as small. Nonetheless, it is so true AND it has everything to do with these invisible glass ceilings, and what you can do to NEVER be held back by them again.

So, here goes…

As a teenager, my future plans were to be a wife and mother. THAT IS IT. How I ended up in college, I’ll honestly never know. It sort of seemed like the thing to do at the time.

By my junior year in college, I’d had a LOT of fun… but my HEART was focused on one thing: I was going to be an old maid. (Go ahead and cue pictures of the cat lady….) My tolerance for men who– frankly — didn’t act like men was, um… LOW. And my definition of a “man” was EXTREMELY narrow. There were a few really FUN men in my life, but none that I considered seriously dating or — one day — marrying.

Giving up on the entire idea of marriage, I changed my major to PRE-MED.

I was almost 20.

I know… laughable, right?

Anyway, I had EARNESTLY given up on the ENTIRE notion of wife and mother and decided I’d go the “career route” and throw myself into work.

And a magical thing happened. I met Chris. Nearly immediately after releasing what I held SO TIGHTLY TO for my entire life… my “dream” showed up in real life.

And not only that, but I got MY PERFECT love story. It was passionate, it was uncomplicated, it was committed, and it was fast.

Fast forward a bit.  Please, right? I DID expand my view of what I wanted in my life. Of course, I also became a wife, and then a mother. I started a business and AT FIRST, it was super easy.

Uncomplicated.
Fast.

I needed money.
My business gave me money.
I loved my business.

The first few years of my business were so SIMPLE and I loved it. My business was “burdened” with one task and one task only: Making Money On MY Terms.

Life and business were good. Money was limited, sure… but life was VERY good.

THEN, I started dreaming…. I started looking to the future. And I also started remembering.

I remembered the fantasies I had when I was little…. climbing trees and journaling my heart out… day dreaming.

I remembered being asked by a teacher what I wanted to be when I grew up… and me saying “famous.” I was young, so she said, “Oh, so you want to be an actor or singer or something?” My answer: “NO. I just want to be me. ” Teacher: confused look, moved on.

I remembered that I used to dream of a BIG life and a BIG influence. Simple, YES… but also meaningful. I wanted to leave a legacy… WELL beyond my growing family.

And then… after I got clear on all of this, my business started feeling STUCK. I started feeling like I could go THIS far, but no further… that I could earn THIS much, but no more…. I started feeling (for the first time ever) an invisible barrier.

Now, it wasn’t a rich white man holding me down.
There was nowhere to protest or march.
It was ALL up to me… this much I knew.

I started really doing some “inner work” to figure out WHAT was going on… I KNEW what to do. Sure, I sabotaged myself at times… but in general, I was doing the work. And while I was still “inching up” I just felt DEFEATED, like it would NEVER work, at least not to the degree I envisioned.

AND THEN IT HIT ME.
I don’t remember when… it wasn’t a moment. it was a collection of moments, an evolution of sorts.

I realized that I had OVER-BURDENED my business. I realized that I HAD BURDENED my business with “in order to” goals…. like IN ORDER TO be a STAR in my industry, I had to reach certain specific (weird) goals…

And, just like my dreams of marriage….

I had to RELEASE that pressure.
I had to SIMPLIFY my business, and here’s how I did it:

I MADE MY BUSINESS ABOUT THE WORK AGAIN.

I REMOVED THE “IN ORDER TO” GOALS.

I REALIZED THAT I DIDN’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO BEGIN PLAYING BIG.

I DIDN’T HAVE TO PROVE MY SUCCESS FIRST… I JUST HAD TO KEEP BEING A SUCCESS.

And so I did. Looking back, EVERY SINGLE TIME (without exception) I’ve come up against that invisible barrier… in life, in love, in business, it’s because I made ONE THING about something else, I had IN ORDER TO goals.

If you are bumping up against a “glass ceiling,” the same thing is going on with you. So, here’s a quick journal prompt for you: Where am I putting an undue burden on this goal? How can I release the OUTCOME or the PRESSURE of the outcome? How can I make it about the work again?

P.S. I created WomenWhoWOW.com to be like the “WELL” of biblical times.  The well “back then” was a gathering place. Women came there DAILY for community, for advice, for refreshment, encouragement and — of course — a concrete resource.

Prior to opening the doors of Women Who WOW, I sold events and info-products. I STILL sell events and info-products. BUT…. women entrepreneurs needed something more. We needed something more relationship based, something more REGULAR…something with a heartbeat and a soul.

And BOY does Women Who WOW have heart and soul!

I created WOW to provide the training, YES…the HOW TO, of course, but — mainly — to provide something more: a sense of belonging for ACCOMPLISHED SUCCESSFUL women, and a DAILY-NESS in their business. The BEST thing our members get? Besides access to each other? Is DAILY, CONSTANT reframes. RE-frames that are so necessary as an entrepreneur. This DAILY-NESS keeps our members on TOP. On top of their industry, AHEAD of their goals, on top of their emotions.

I went out of town this past weekend and came home with a mug that said, “Wake. Pray. Slay. Every day I’m hustling.”

Perfect, I thought. but, the world of women entrepreneurs is divided when it comes to the TERM hustle. As for me, I have always embraced it… and always will.

The hustle is real.
The hustle is NOBLE.
The hustle is what I LOVE.

Still, a lot of influencers, creators, coaches, experts bristle against the term “hustle.” They don’t like it. To them, they feel like “hustle” is the OPPOSITE of flow.

I understand the hustle-aversion. I do.
I understand it MORE watching SOME women entrepreneurs living completely out of alignment with their goals…. out of alignment with their HEARTS, even.
Hustling every day.
Leaving early.
Returning home late.
Missing the important stuff.
HUSTLING from appointment to appointment, performing on demand…. Smiling on the outside, but feeling EXHAUSTED and BURNED OUT on the inside.

I want no part of that hustle.
And let me be frank: I’ll take no part in that hustle.
Life is too short.
And my business, my message, my PURPOSE is too important.

Too important to risk burn out.
Too important to DILUTE with too much “performance.”
Too important to BLUR with too much-harried action.

So, allow me to rewrite this “Everyday I’m Hustling” creed… so we as women entrepreneurs stand divided no longer.

What if YOUR HUSTLE, your EVERYDAY hustle was designed and tailored BY YOU to be a perfect fit? What if your HUSTLE was something you woke up EXCITED to do? What if your hustle created not only money freedom but time freedom as well? What if your hustle required NO performance and allowed you to be COMPLETELY yourself?

Because that IS what hustle is to me.
Doing the work, Yes… of course.
But never having it FEEL like work.
Because MY hustle involves me waking up and being myself… and reaching out to women, serving them, impacting them, encouraging, empowering and equipping them.

Like an artist, I wake up and “do” my art.
I let it out because it’s what I’m here to do.
And I create income streams that NATURALLY both support my “art” AND are a natural EXTENSION of the art itself.
It all flows.

In fact, many of my Women Who WOW members — I guarantee — aren’t even sure which of my stuff is PAID for and which is given for free as “marketing” content. It just flows. Beautifully, effortlessly, easily.

Am I still hustling?

YOU KNOW I AM.

I wake up every morning with a fire in my belly to take NEW ground, to push FURTHER into the world of women entrepreneurs, to challenge MORE of the status quo and to increase my impact and influence in this world…..

So, YES… every day I’m hustling. Wake. Pray. Slay. This is EXACTLY the order in which I have choreographed my mornings.
